Elements of Yoga


According to maharishi Patanali, it has suggest 8 folds process to attain purification of body and mind and achieve Atma and Parmatama.They are -
यम् नियम आसन प्राणायाम प्रत्याहार धारणा ध्यान समाधी
1. YAM - These are the basic principles of the benefits of society.They are honesty, truthful,non-violence,non-steal and absence.
2 NIYAMA - These are the basic principles for self.They are excretion,satisfaction, devotion, regular study of the Vedas and deep devotion to God.
3. ASANA - स्थिरसुखमास्नाम asana are to improve the whole body fitness.
4. PRANAYAMA - To control the breath is called pranayama.Its a breathing exercises.
5. PRATAYAHAR - These are performed to improve intellectual capability.It develops inner mental strength by controlling sense organs.
6. DHARNA - Concentrating your mind on the navel center,heart which is in the form of white lotus,light glowing on you head,center of the eyebrows,front portion of the nose,front portion of the tongue and suture on the top of the head and other physical part and sitting in one place attentively is called concentration.
When the senses and mind starts turning inwards due to resisting the senses,concentrating them on a particular place with respect to condition is called concentration.Diverting the mind from a huge subject and focusing it on light aims soul supreme.
7.DHAYANA - Process to control the mind.It develops concentration.
8. SAMADHI - When meditation reaches its climax is called samadhi.
